Blogger Mobile Blog Templates: What Mobile Browsers Are Supported ?

Have you ever got this situation: You enabled the mobile template for your Blogspot blog on Blogger, and visited the blog by using your smart phone, but still came to the regular blog, saw exactly as what you saw by using desktop computer ! What happened ? Why Blogger said the smart phone users will be automatically redirected  to the mobile site ?

It happens because old Blogger's mobile templates only support Webkit-based mobile browsers, including Android Browser, Chrome for Android and iOS, and Mobile Safari, but not all versions of Blackberry or Symbian.

Then what mobile browsers are supported by the Blogger mobile templates?

What is Webkit

WebKit (webkit.org) is an open source web browser engine, with portions licensed under the LGPL and BSD licenses. WebKit is also the name of the Mac OS X system framework version of the engine that's used by Safari, Dashboard, Mail, and many other OS X applications.

WebKit and the WebKit logo are trademarks of Apple Inc.

Google Chrome and Chromium- the open-source project behind Google Chrome, is using WebKit at the core.

What mobile browsers are Webkit-based?

Here's a list of the mobile browsers based on Webkit, therefore supported by Blogger mobile templates:
  • Maxthon Browser (Freeware)- for Android and iPad
  • Atlantis- for all POSIX (Linux/BSD/UNIX-like OSes), Red Hat/Fedora Linux
  • BumperCar- a browser designed for kids, for Mac
  • Element Browser- for Mac
  • Chrome/Chromium (Google)
  • KidsBrowser-  a browser designed for kids, on Mac
  • LeechCraft- Cross-platform (Linux, Windows)
  • Iris Browser- for Windows Mobile, Windows CE, Qt Embedded
  • Midori- for all GTK+ 2 platforms
  • OmniWeb- for Mac
  • osb-browser (Nokia)- Available for all POSIX (Linux/BSD/UNIX-like OSes), Linux
  • Safari (Apple)- Safari is Apple's own browser
  • surf - on Linux
  • Web Browser for S60 (Nokia)- for Nokia S60
So, you can see not all the smart phone browsers are supported by the Blogger mobile templates.

Redirect the mobile visit manually

To make your mobile visitors to go to the mobile blog, you can simply add a link (of your mobile site) at the top of blog front page, so they can click on it and go. For details, check my previous post "What's the Mobile Blog Web Address for Blogger (blogspot) ?"

What's your experience with the mobile browser and Blogger mobile templates?
